As a Senior CAD Specialist with an engineering background, you will lead the technical work on CAD data for CNC machining. This role requires deep expertise in the STEP file format. You should be skilled in reading, parsing, and manipulating STEP CAD files to derive CNC toolpaths and machining instructions from 3D models. Your responsibilities will include extracting key manufacturing parameters (feature geometry, GD&T, toolpaths, cycle times) and integrating them into a production cost-estimation application. You’ll work closely with software developers to ensure that STEP-based geometry is accurately translated into CNC operations and cost models.
Requirements: * 5+ years working with CAD/CAM systems in machining or fabrication environments. * Deep understanding of the STEP file format and experience handling STEP files across CAD platforms. * Familiarity with CNC processes, G-code generation, toolpath planning, and machining best practices. * Proficient in a suitable language for CAD/CAM data processing. * Strong team collaboration skills and an Upper-Intermediate English level.
Nice to have: * Advanced credentials in CAD systems (e.g., SOLIDWORKS, CATIA). * Familiarity with STEP-NC, MBD (Model-Based Definition), or similar emerging standards. * Understanding how CAD/CAM outputs contribute to manufacturing planning and cost tracking systems. * Experience in plugin development or CAD/CAM tool automation. * Background using or building cost-estimation tools (Excel, MATLAB, or custom apps).
Responsibilities: * Build and maintain tools to load, parse, and extract data from STEP (ISO 10303) files — including geometry, tolerances, and manufacturing annotations (PMI). * Translate 3D CAD models into CNC toolpaths and machining parameters using CAM algorithms or techniques. * Feed extracted manufacturing data (toolpaths, geometry, cycle times) into a production cost-estimation platform. * Collaborate with machinists and engineers to validate STEP-derived data, ensuring accuracy, feasibility, and best practices. * Write technical guides and help define coding and CAD/CAM standards related to STEP integration.
