Nubes Consulting is supporting a large-scale Azure migration programme for a major client in Spain. We are seeking an experienced migration engineer with deep hands-on expertise in moving production SQL Server environments into Azure SQL Managed Instance. This is a cloud migration engineering role — not traditional database support — requiring someone who thrives in complex, production-grade lift-and-shift and re-platform scenarios.
Key responsibilities * Lead end-to-end migration of on-premises SQL Server workloads to Azure SQL Managed Instance, including assessment, planning, execution, and post-migration validation. * Design and operate migration pipelines using Azure Database Migration Service (DMS), including online and offline migration modes with minimal cutover downtime. * Provision and configure SQL MI infrastructure using Terraform, including VNet integration, subnet delegation, and managed instance tiers. * Architect and troubleshoot hybrid networking requirements: ExpressRoute, VPN gateways, peering, and NSG/route table configurations specific to SQL MI. * Develop and execute cutover plans, including pre-migration testing, fallback procedures, and stakeholder communication. * Identify and resolve performance regressions post-migration through query store analysis, wait statistics, and right-sizing of service tiers. * Document migration runbooks, dependency maps, and operational handover artefacts.
Required experience * Proven hands-on experience delivering production migrations from on-premises SQL Server to Azure SQL Managed Instance — not just proof-of-concept work. * Strong working knowledge of Azure DMS for both offline and online migrations, including pre-migration assessment tooling (DMA, SKU recommender). * Terraform proficiency for provisioning Azure SQL MI, networking resources, and supporting infrastructure. * Solid understanding of Azure hybrid networking: VNet design, subnetting for SQL MI, routing, NSGs, and DNS resolution across hybrid environments. * Experience planning and executing production cutovers with minimal disruption, including rollback planning. * Strong SQL Server performance tuning skills applicable in a cloud context: query optimisation, index strategy, resource governor, and MI-specific considerations. * English language
Nice to have * Experience on large enterprise Azure migration programmes. * Familiarity with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and alerting for SQL MI workloads. * Knowledge of Azure Policy, RBAC, and security hardening for SQL MI.
