Director of Embedded SystemsWho We Are Our client is an IoT platform trusted by thousands of companies to connect and manage their smart devices. We’re a global company with deep expertise in embedded systems, cloud infrastructure, and hardware connectivity. Our platform powers everything from commercial HVAC systems to consumer devices. We’re a lean, high-impact team where your work directly shapes the product and the company’s trajectory. No bureaucracy, no politics — just smart people solving hard problems. The Role We’re looking for an embedded systems leader who can architect our edge strategy while staying hands-on with code. You’ll own the technical direction for how product connects to the physical world—from MCU selection to cellular connectivity to firmware architecture to helping customers integrate complex hardware.
This isn’t a pure management role. You’ll write firmware, evaluate cellular modules, debug connectivity issues, and work directly with customers. But you’ll also shape our multi-year technical roadmap and build the hardware/firmware team that executes it.
You’ll work closely with our CEO, Embedded Solutions Architecture advisor and interface directly with sales, customer success, and partners in industries like HVAC, industrial automation, smart buildings, and other electronics What You’ll DoStrategic Technical Leadership * Define our embedded systems strategy: which MCUs, SBCs, cellular modules, and protocols we standardize on * Evaluate emerging connectivity technologies (5G, NB-IoT, LTE-M, NTN/satellite IoT) and make bet-the-company decisions on what to support * Shape our edge computing architecture * Build technical roadmaps that balance innovation with production stability * Make strategic decisions about industry partnerships
Hands-On Engineering * Write firmware for ESP32, STM32, Nordic, and other MCU platforms * Integrate cellular modules and optimize for power consumption, cost, and reliability * Design reference implementations for common use cases (Modbus gateways, BACnet bridges, cellular connectivity) * Debug connectivity issues across different carriers and regions * Build SDKs and libraries that make it easy for customers to integrate the platform
Customer-Facing Technical Work * Partner with sales and TAMs on technical discovery and solution design * Work directly with enterprise customers on proof-of-concepts and custom integrations * Present at conferences (like AHR 2026) and lead technical workshops * Create technical content: reference designs, integration guides, best practices
Team Building * Grow and mentor a small, elite embedded systems team * Set engineering standards and development practices * Foster a culture of technical excellence and pragmatic decision-making
What We’re Looking ForMust-haves: * Deep embedded firmware experience (10+ years): You’ve shipped production firmware on resource-constrained devices * Cellular IoT expertise: Hands-on experience with LTE-M, NB-IoT, Cat-1, or Cat-M modules. You understand the tradeoffs between connectivity options and have debugged carrier certification issues * Wireless connectivity knowledge: Deep understanding of cellular protocols, eSIM/iSIM provisioning, network architectures, and emerging technologies like NTN (non-terrestrial networks/satellite IoT) * Hardware literacy: You understand electronics well enough to debug schematics, choose components, and talk intelligently with EE teams * MCU/SBC ecosystem expertise: Hands-on experience with ESP32, STM32, Raspberry Pi, or similar platforms * Communication protocols: Deep knowledge of UART, SPI, I2C, Modbus, BACnet, or industrial protocols * Systems thinking: You see the whole stack—from sensor to cloud—and architect accordingly * Hands-on coding: You still love writing firmware and debugging hardware * Customer empathy: You can translate technical complexity into solutions customers understand * Leadership without ego: You’re comfortable being the most senior person in the room or rolling up your sleeves to fix a bug
Nice-to-haves: * Experience with satellite IoT or NTN technologies * Background in HVAC, building automation, or industrial IoT * Open-source contributions or active maker community involvement * Experience with edge ML/AI on embedded devices * Prior startup or fast-growth company experience
Not a fit if: * You want to only manage and delegate—this role requires significant IC work * You need heavy process and structure to be productive * You’re not comfortable with ambiguity and rapid context-switching * You prefer deep specialization over broad generalist problem-solving
Why Join * Impact: Your decisions directly affect thousands of devices and dozens of enterprise customers. No layers of bureaucracy between your work and real-world outcomes. * Technical freedom: We’re not tied to legacy decisions. You’ll have genuine influence over our tech stack, connectivity strategy, and architecture. * Profitable and sustainable: We’re bootstrapped, profitable, and growing. No VC pressure to scale irresponsibly or pivot away from what works. * Modern remote culture: Work from anywhere. Async-first communication. Results over hours logged. * Learning environment: Work alongside a CEO who’s technical and deeply engaged. Small team means massive exposure to all aspects of the business. * Real problems: Our customers are building real products—not consumer apps or vanity projects. HVAC systems, industrial sensors, critical infrastructure.
Practical Details * Location: Remote * Compensation: Competitive salary + meaningful equity * Team: Report to CEO, collaborate closely with engineering, sales, and customer success * Travel: Occasional (conferences, customer meetings, team offsites)
