We are looking for a strong PHP Backend Developer to join our engineering team and help scale a mission-critical production system. You will work on backend feature development, performance optimization, and infrastructure improvements as we prepare for ~10x traffic growth within the next 6 months.
This role requires a production-focused mindset, with strong attention to scalability, performance, and reliability under heavy load.
Main requirements: * 4+ years of experience in PHP backend development * Strong hands-on experience with Laravel (currently Laravel 10) * Willingness and ability to upgrade frameworks and services * Experience working with microservices architectures
AWS / Infrastructure / Scaling: * Hands-on experience with AWS * Understanding of infrastructure design for auto-scaling systems * Strong production mindset: ability to write backend code that performs reliably under load
Databases / Performance: * Solid experience with MySQL and MongoDB * Experience working with large datasets, complex queries, and performance tuning * Understanding how backend systems behave in production under heavy traffic
DevOps basics / Tooling: * Comfortable working with Docker (containerized environments) * Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools: * AWS CloudWatch (logs & monitoring) * Sentry (error tracking)
Responsibilities * Design, develop, and maintain backend services using PHP and Laravel * Extend existing functionality and build new backend features * Work within a microservices architecture (currently ~4 services, consolidating into 2 core services) * Participate in framework and service upgrades (including Laravel upgrades across services) * Contribute to infrastructure improvements and cloud migration efforts (EC2 → ECS, Load Balancers, potentially API Gateway) * Optimize backend performance for large datasets and high API traffic * Ensure systems scale safely and perform reliably under load * Monitor, troubleshoot, and continuously improve production systems * Collaborate with the team to support systems handling significant throughput (~50,000 payments per week, even during slower periods)
Nice to have * Basic ability to handle small fixes in React / Next.js
What we offer * Work on a high-load fintech product with real production challenges * Opportunity to influence architecture, performance, and scalability decisions * Modern cloud-based infrastructure and engineering best practices * A professional team focused on quality, reliability, and growth * Long-term project with active scaling and technical evolution
Project description We are building a payment solution based on open banking, designed to help merchants and vendors manage payouts and collections from their customers in a single system. Our platform operates in a high-throughput production environment, processing tens of thousands of payments weekly, with significant growth ahead.
From a technical perspective, the project is built on AWS cloud infrastructure, fully containerized with Docker, and uses CI/CD pipelines via GitHub. Strong security measures are in place to protect sensitive financial data and prevent unauthorized access.
Our core tech stack includes PHP (Laravel), microservices architecture, and MongoDB, with ongoing infrastructure evolution to support rapid scaling.
