The Role We’re looking for an Engineering Team Lead to guide a cross-functional web squad. You’ll be accountable for delivery outcomes, team health, and engineering quality. You’ll partner closely with Product and Design to turn goals into roadmaps, keep priorities crystal-clear, and unblock the team. You’ll stay hands-on enough to review code, shape architecture, and make pragmatic trade-offs. What You’ll Do * Own delivery & prioritization * Turn product goals into a clear roadmap and weekly plans * Prioritize using impact/effort frameworks (RICE/MoSCoW), manage risks and scope * Lead the team * Set expectations, run standups/planning, drive crisp decisions * Coach engineers, give actionable feedback, grow careers * Foster a culture of ownership, psychological safety, and high quality * Recruit & grow the org * Own hiring for frontend/backend/QA roles in partnership with recruiting * Define scorecards, design structured interviews & practical work-samples * Calibrate interviewers, run fair debriefs, and make decisive hire/no-hire calls * Build a strong inbound pipeline, leverage outbound sourcing when needed * Ensure smooth onboarding and 90-day ramp plans for new hires * Raise the engineering bar * Enforce standards (ESLint, Prettier, Conventional Commits) and a solid test strategy (Cypress E2E) * Guide architectural choices in a Nx monorepo; keep boundaries clean and builds fast * Champion performance (Core Web Vitals like LCP/CLS/INP) and security best practices * Partner across the business * Collaborate with Product, Design, Payments, and Ops to ship value fast * Coordinate on auth/payments * Ensure i18n quality (i18next + Crowdin) and smooth release processes * Stay hands-on (when it counts) * Review critical PRs, lead incident response/post-mortems * Prototype risky flows to de-risk complexity
Must-Have Experience * 2+ years leading engineers (tech lead, team lead, or EM) with clear delivery results * Strong communication: sets context, writes clearly, manages stakeholders, runs effective meetings * Proven prioritization & task management from roadmap to weekly execution * Solid frontend or full-stack background with React + TypeScript in production * Comfortable guiding work in a monorepo (Nx preferred) and enforcing engineering standards * Recruiting experience: running full-cycle hiring for engineers and QA (scorecards, structured interviews, work-samples, interviewer calibration, data-driven debriefs)
Strong Pluses * Familiarity with PHP/CodeIgniter; effective collaboration across a PHP backend * Built or scaled a QA function (hiring QA engineers, defining E2E strategy, triage/defect workflows) * Payments/auth/security hardening experience * Performance optimization for high-traffic apps (bundle strategy, profiling, Web Vitals) * i18n pipelines and translation workflows * E-commerce or gaming platform background; real-time UX patterns * Experience using AI tools to accelerate coding, code review, and documentation
Success Looks Like (first 90–180 days) * A visible, prioritized roadmap with clear owners and predictable weekly cadence * Lead time down, fewer carry-overs, and stable releases * Tighter PR loop: small PRs, fast reviews, trunk-based discipline * Measurable performance wins (e.g., improved LCP/INP on key journeys) * Hiring: calibrated interview loop, reduced time-to-offer, streamlined onboarding for engineers and QA
