Role Overview We seek our first dedicated Staff Backend Developer to join our lean team of 4 engineers. You’ll be the technical leader responsible for transforming our backend into a Stripe-like API-first architecture with well-defined core business objects and clean internal/external APIs.
This role offers significant technical decision-making authority and the opportunity to mentor junior engineers while solving complex challenges in real-time fleet operations, service request workflows, and multi-tenant business logic.
You’ll work with our modern stack, including Convex, Clerk, TypeScript, Stripe, and Google Maps API, to build systems that scale with our growing user base. Responsibilities API-First Architecture Leadership * Design and implement core business data models following API-first principles. * Create clean, consistent internal and external APIs. * Establish patterns and standards for API design that other engineers can follow and extend.
Critical Technical Debt Resolution * Refactor existing core business data models to eliminate inconsistencies and improve scalability. * Transform our service request workflows into a clean finite state machine model with predictable state transitions. * Implement robust user role access patterns and permission systems across the platform.
Database Architecture & Performance * Design scalable database schemas that handle anticipated growth. * Optimize complex queries. * Implement performance monitoring and establish SLAs for database operations.
Technical Leadership & Mentorship * Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and technical guidance. * Challenge existing approaches and propose better solutions backed by clear technical reasoning. * Establish development best practices, testing standards, and documentation patterns. * Lead technical discussions and architectural decision-making.
System Reliability & Performance * Ensure platform uptime and SLA compliance through robust error handling and monitoring. * Optimize API performance focusing on latency, error rates, and throughput. * Implement comprehensive testing strategies to improve release stability. * Design systems that gracefully handle failures and scale efficiently.
Qualifications Required Experience * 6+ years of backend development with expert-level TypeScript/JavaScript skills. * Proven experience designing API-first architectures and core business object models. * Strong background in database schema design and multi-tenant application architecture. * Deep understanding of authentication, authorization, and role-based access control.
